UNIVERSAL HEALTH COVERAGE
Universal Health Coverage (UHC) means that all individuals and communities receive the health services they need without suffering financial hardship. It includes the full spectrum of essential, quality health services, from health promotion to prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and palliative care. Progress toward UHC can be tracked through monitoring the proportion of a population that can access essential quality health services and monitoring the proportion of the population that spends a large amount of household income on health. The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have a target of achieving UHC by 2030.
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS
The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are 17 goals with 169 targets that all 191 UN Member States have agreed to try to achieve by the year 2030. Health has a central place in SDG 3: Ensure healthy lives and promoting well-being for all at all ages, underpinned by targets that cover a wide spectrum of WHO’s work, and is closely linked with other goals such as SDG 6: Ensure access to water and sanitation for all.
