To identify gaps and areas for improvement in handling the detection, alert and response to a public health event of chemical origin in Ghana in the context of the IHR (2005)._x000D_
Specific objectives_x000D_
• Objective 1: To exercise the alert and response capabilities of public health authorities and partners for a chemical event_x000D_
• Objective 2: To review existing plans and guidelines for a chemical event response and examine practical applications_x000D_

Draft aimag emergency operations centre procedures were tested for information sharing, risk assessment, risk communication and the incident management system. The most recent exercise revealed that there was no coordinated surveillance or systematic risk assessment in place during peace time among sectors. The main area requiring improvement was the absence of a proper chain of command; decisions were mostly based on non-scientific considerations, public perception, acquired knowledge and experience rather than a risk assessment conducted by the technical team.

La mission a atteint ses objectifs : i. Un atelier d’évaluation des risques sanitaires prioritaires a été conduit et a abouti à une cartographie des risques incluant les forces et faiblesses à faire face à ces risques, au niveau national. ii. Un exercice de simulation sur table évaluant la coordination de la réponse face à l’épidémie de rage en cours en RCA. . iii. Un plan de travail sur la préparation et la réponse aux urgences sanitaires a été élaboré pour la période de mai à décembre 2016

The purpose of the exercise is to evaluate preparedness and response mechanisms in response to emerging public health threats, and to provide opportunities to validate existing mechanisms and identify areas for enhancement.
