Strengthening IPC & Quality for Resilient Health Services Workshop

Date: 23-25 October 2018 Region African Region Country Uganda

A technical workshop on “Strengthening IPC & Quality for Resilient Health Services” was convened by the WHO Quality Systems & Resilience (QSR) Unit, under the Tackling Deadly Diseases in Africa Programme (TDDAP), with support from the Global IPC unit, WHO Regional Office for Africa and several WHO country offices. This workshop was held from the 23rd to the 25th of October 2018 in Kampala, Uganda with representation from 12 African countries, partner and donor agencies, and WHO experts from the country, regional and headquarters levels.  The workshop was designed to strengthen country and regional capacity in Quality, including Infection Prevention and Control.

The objectives of the workshop were:

  • To understand the current situation on Quality and IPC in the African region, as well as current efforts on integration between the two technical areas and with health security activities.
  • To determine key priorities from collated country experiences on strengths and gaps in Quality and IPC, with reference to the WHO core components of IPC programmes and Handbook on National Quality Policies and Strategies.
  • To identify various entry points to strengthen Quality, including IPC, through health systems and health security policies and plans.

A number of priorities emerged with some consistent across multiple countries. The country experiences and best practices identified during the workshop will inform the work of support teams working to build resilient health systems and linkages between systems and health security, and provide direct areas of action in countries and across the region.
