Title

Assess if the number of staff is still sufficient to assure continuity of work without overburdening staff members

Why

At this point a large part of the quality management system has been implemented. The quality management procedures may cause extra routine work that needs to be done while the number of staff may not have changed. It is important, and a requirement of the ISO 15189 standard, that staff is not overburdened with work. This may increase the risk of accidents occurring, errors being made, and also leads to bad staff morale and even bad staff health.

What

Investigate the work-burden for staff members. If the amount of tasks is too high for some staff members correct this by:

  • If possible a reorganization of tasks over other staff members
  • Hiring new staff

How & who

Laboratory Manager:

  1. Investigate the work-burden of each staff member by observation and by assessing their Personal Job Descriptions. Also ask for the staff members own experience regarding the work burden.
  2. If the amount of work seems to be too high for some staff members, choose the best option given above.
  3. When a reorganization takes place take care to update the Personal Job Descriptions. If positions are added or removed in the laboratory organization, adapt the Organizational Chart and Authorization Matrix as well. Notify all staff members of the changes. If staff members have received other tasks and authorities, notify the rest of the laboratory staff during a weekly staff meeting.
