The Southern District was one of the pioneer districts being selected to participate in the 2008 Age-friendly Community Project under the Hong Kong Plan of Action on Aging. Since 2008, a series of Age-friendly Safety Community Project- Southern District have been implementing in the Southern District with different focuses and domains from year to year. The Southern District Council thought highly of the opinions and comments from older people. To support the bottom up approach, older people have been fully involved in all stages of the projects as important roles, in which they gained concern from the general public and had better understanding about the concept of age-friendly community.

Through these years, the Southern District Council cooperated with the Southern District Healthy and Safe Association Limited (the Association), the Aberdeen Kai-fong Welfare Association Social Service and other elderly service units in the Southern District, supported the Age-friendly projects as sponsors and organizers. In 2016-17, the Labour and Welfare Bureau (LWB) and the Elderly Commission jointly launched the Funding Scheme for Age-friendly Community and allocated a grant of $53,000 to the Southern District Council (SDC) for organizing various age-friendly related activities with local organizations and institutions at district level. In addition, the SDC is also encouraged to participate in the World Health Organization’s Global Network of Age-friendly Community (GNAFC) with regard to its own circumstances.
