Summary

In response to the continuous growth of the older adult population in the Southern District of Hong Kong, enhancing public spaces to ensure that they are safe for those with mobility restrictions is critical. The District invested in improving a staircase leading to Ap Lei Chau Main Street’s bus terminal, a key space for older adults living in the neighbourhood. By widening the staircase older adults have increased access to their community and are able to navigate the main street safely.

Since there are many older adults residing in Ap Lei Chau Main Street, it is important to prevent them from experiencing any stair-related injuries. Some staircases are hazardous to older pedestrians increasing the risk of a trip or fall. In addition, it can be difficult for older people to ascend or descend on a narrow staircase. Apart from experiencing physical harm, narrow staircases might also negatively impact older adults mental health as a result of decreased confidence in their enviornemnts.

The above mentioned staircase was improved to conform to the current safety standard. As a result, the staircase is now more user friendly for all pedestrians, and especially older people. As the ageing population continues to increase, the Southern District will continue to put an emphasis on building age-friendly environments.
