The city of Šabac has established a comprehensive framework that addresses the eight essential factors for healthy and active aging. This framework is centered on the efforts of the “Council for Improving the Position of the Elderly and the Local Community,” (Est. 28 Feb 2024), which is dedicated to improving the quality of life for all residents and encouraging an active, healthy lifestyle across generations. In April 2024, the city assembly adopted the “Local Action Plan for Improving the Position of Older People in the Local Community for 2024 and 2025” (LAPS). This strategic document emphasizes sustainable, innovative projects, promotes the participation of older residents in decision-making, and fosters intergenerational cooperation.
Developed and proposed by the Council, LAPS provides a guiding framework that aligns with the World Health Organization’s standards for age-friendly cities, positioning Šabac as a leader in inclusive urban development in Serbia. The plan was crafted through a collaborative process, involving consultations with stakeholders and organizations representing older adults. This inclusive approach ensures that the strategy effectively addresses key areas of need for the older population, including housing, transportation, health and social services, and community engagement.
A major priority for 2024-2025 is the establishment of a Centre for Intergenerational Cooperation and Solidarity. To support this, the city has allocated funds to renovate and adapt a building within a green area, ensuring accessibility for all. The furnishings and equipment will be funded by external project sources, reflecting Šabac’s commitment to creating inclusive and accessible spaces.
By cultivating an age-friendly identity, Šabac hopes to inspire other communities in Serbia and beyond to adopt similar initiatives. The city’s proactive approach and dedication to fostering an age-friendly community serve as a model for other regions, setting a high standard for for the inclusion of older adults and intergenerational solidarity.
