Summary

The Senior University of Gondomar is promoted by the Union of Parishes of Gondomar (S. Cosme), Valbom and Jovim. It was created in March 2006 with 55 senior students, 12 disciplines and 10 volunteers teachers, with the proposal to streamline and organize regular cultural activities of learning, entertainment and recreation for citizens aged 50 or older. Currently the senior university enrolls 340 senior students, 51 volunteer teachers and offers 52 disciplines, spanning languages, history, ICT’s, arts, music, dance, gymnastics, culture, science, among others.The main objectives are to: 1) Encourage participation and engagement of senior citizens in cultural activities, citizenship, education and leisure; 2) Disseminate the history, science, tradition, solidarity, the arts, tolerance, places and other socio-cultural phenomena among seniors; 3) Be a center of information and dissemination services, duties and rights of seniors; 4) Develop the interpersonal and social relations between different generations; 5) Foster research on gerontological issues. The Senior University of Gondomar is part of Senior Universities Network in Portugal that represents 250 Senior Universities and 38.400 senior students and 4550 volunteers teachers.
