Smart Parking Spaces for Disabled People And Elderly

Sharjah City Municipality (SCM) has introduced recently smart parking spaces allocated for the elderly and people with disabilities, using artificial intelligence techniques to facilitate the use of such parking spots in the city of Sharjah.

The pilot project was launched in the parking spaces allocated for the elderly and people with disabilities at SCM’s Public Parking Department. It will be later applied to such other parking spaces at all the municipality’s buildings and facilities.

A loop detector is installed at the smart parking space to detect the presence of vehicles and then open the barrier. A control room unit will be located in a service room assigned for this purpose.

The implementation of this project is expected to curb the illegal use of the parking spaces allocated for the elderly and disabled people by alarming the parking inspectors who will come immediately to the spot and take a legal action against violators.

This initiative will bolster the status of Sharjah as an Accessible City for the Physically Disabled, a title it gained last year in recognition of its reputation as an age friendly cities for the elderly.

 The Idea behind the Initiative

Using artificial intelligence to facilitate the use of parking spaces allocated for the elderly and disabled people in the city of Sharjah.

Components

  • Control Unit
  • Power supply
  • Loop detector
  • Relay
  • Lamp
  • Bell
  • Timer
  • Wire single core 2.5mm

How it works

The power supply will be connected to the loop detector and it’s about a single core wire 2.5mm and the voltage connected to the loop is 220v. The control unit is installed in a service room that chosen by the administration, also the lamp, bell and timer.  The magnetic field will be generated when a car entering the parking (disabled parking), it will cut off the magnetic field to send signals from the control unit to the relay which will lead to open the lamp and the bell. The bell will close after a certain period due to the timer, while the lamp will remain open until the car leave the parking.

Other benefits of this initiative:

It helps to curb the illegal use of parking spaces allocated for the elderly and disabled people by alarming the parking inspectors who will take a legal action against violators.

Implementation of the Initiative

The initiative has been implemented for the parking spaces allocated for the elderly and disabled people at the Public parking Department.

What is next?

The initiative will be implemented at the Public Health and Engineering sectors, and then it will cover all departments of the municipality.
