Porto, Portugal promotes a vision of age not as a barrier, but as a dimension of citizenship

The 4th Porto Age-Friendly City Conference brought together, this Wednesday, experts, researchers, managers, professionals and citizens to “turn longevity into an opportunity”. The event, held at the Super Bock Arena – Pavilhão Rosa Mota, invited everyone to “see age not as a barrier, but as a dimension of citizenship”.

“Ageing well is a right, and ensuring that right is a mission for all of us,” stressed the Councillor for Social Cohesion, at the opening of the municipal initiative which, according to Fernando Paulo, “affirms the Municipality of Porto’s commitment to building a more inclusive, supportive city, prepared for all ages.”

Recalling what he called a “remarkable civilisational achievement – reflecting social progress, scientific advances and better quality of life” – the increase in life expectancy in Portugal – the Councillor considers population ageing “not a problem to be solved, but an achievement to be valued”.

“The real challenge,” he argued, “is to ensure that everyone can age with dignity, autonomy and participation.”

For Fernando Paulo, this was a day “to look to the future: to what still needs to be done, improved and innovated.” Beyond “a more accessible Porto, with safe mobility, adequate housing, welcoming public spaces and services that respond to people’s real needs,” the future, he added, “must be a city where age is not a barrier, but a dimension of citizenship.”
