Committed To Becoming More Age-Friendly
Wrexham Wales
Wrexham County Borough is committed to becoming a recognised member of the WHO Global Network of Age Friendly Cities and Communities. In response to a rapidly ageing population—projected to reach 26% aged 65 and over by 2040—the local authority has developed a comprehensive Age Friendly Action Plan (2025–2028). This plan aligns with Welsh Government priorities, the Older People’s Commissioner for Wales’ strategy, and Wrexham’s Corporate Plan. At the heart of Wrexham’s approach is co-production, ensuring older people are actively involved in shaping services. The Ageing Well in Wrexham Public Forum and a forthcoming multi-agency Steering Group provide platforms for older residents to contribute to planning, delivery, and evaluation.
Wrexham’s programmes span the eight WHO domains, with initiatives that include accessible outdoor spaces, inclusive leisure centres, and dementia-friendly community hubs. Transport services such as Shopmobility and community car schemes support mobility and independence, while refurbished sheltered housing and independent living schemes offer safe, adaptable homes. Digital inclusion and adult learning programmes empower older people to stay connected and engaged. Health and wellbeing services—including social prescribing, dementia support, and falls prevention—are integrated across sectors to promote holistic care.
The city is embedding age-friendly principles across departments and working collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders, including health services, voluntary organisations, and community groups. Communication is inclusive and accessible, with bilingual resources and multiple formats to ensure older people can access information and participate fully. Through evidence-based planning, strong partnerships, and a culture of continuous improvement, Wrexham is building a community where older people are valued, supported, and empowered to live healthy, active, and connected lives.
