The Town of Windsor has a variety of policies, programs and services targeted at the older population with plans to make the town more age friendly.

Transportation: In partnership with Sonoma County Area Agency on Aging and the Town of Windsor, rides are provided for local homebound seniors at no cost to them. Using volunteers, the Windsor Wheels program provides rides for medical, social/recreational appointments, and food shopping. The mission of the Windsor Wheels program is to reduce isolation and increase overall wellness in our senior population.

The Windsor Shuttle is a free service for all riders under the Sonoma County Transit’s “Free-Fare” program that is subsidized by the Town of Windsor. It is also available during the Summer Nights on the Green concert series throughout the summer months making it easier for our community to participate in these events.

Housing: Within the Town of Windsor there are a variety of housing options for seniors. From 55+ independent living developments, assisted, residential care and memory care units. Currently there are 2 large developments in process that will house an additional 157 independent living units and 64 assisted living/memory care units. The Town of Windsor has an inclusionary housing ordinance.

Outdoor spaces and Buildings: The Town of Windsor has 17 community and neighborhood parks including a large outdoor space – The Town Green- that hosts music concerts and many intergenerational events. The Bicycle and Pedestrian Trails master plan was adopted in 2014 to enhance non-motorized mobility and to improve safety, access, traffic congestion, air quality, and the quality of life of Sonoma County residents, workers and visitors.

Civic participation/Respect & inclusion: The Windsor Senior Citizen Advisory Commission (SCAC) was created to serve as an advocate for Windsor’s older adult residents to: identify the needs of Windsor’s senior residents, advise the City Council, city boards, commissions and departments as well as private agencies on matters related to those needs, and increase awareness of those needs among the broader population.

Summary: All of these initiatives involve organizations and leaders from the public, private and nonprofit sectors and mobilize them collectively to have a greater impact. Age Friendly Sonoma County will complement and leverage those partnerships to activate WHO’s policy framework of active aging in our community.
