Tucker is located in northeastern DeKalb County, situated between the City of Stone Mountain to the south, Gwinnett County to the north and Interstate 285 to the west. A city of “sevens”, Tucker’s downtown is seven miles from a handful of neighboring cities, as well as being home to the seven Tucker Cluster schools. Although not incorporated city until 2016, Tucker has been on the map and in the hearts of residents for over a century.
Through volunteer efforts the Tucker Community has come together to form various community minded groups in order to create and promote an age-friendly community. This includes working with the Atlanta Regional Center (ARC) to secure funding for sidewalks and public transportation stop upgrades. The City boasts a robust Friends of Parks groups that represent each of the 10 parks within the City Boundaries and works closely with Park Pride in their efforts. Area Churches support the entire community as well. The City Government adopted a Aging-Friendly Resolution in May of 2018 pledging to promote a Lifelong Community by Promoting Housing and Transportation Options, Encouraging Healthy Lifestyles, and Expanding Information and Access to Services.
The Tucker Lifelong Community (TLC) Project is a program implemented by the Tucker Civic Association in conjunction with the Atlanta Regional Commission to create Tucker as such a lifelong community. The goal of the project is to help Tucker be a community to move to and stay in for life. Lifelong Communities (LLC) are cities and neighborhoods that provide an array of housing types that appeal to individuals both young and old; offer opportunities for healthy living including parks and outdoor spaces; have ways to get around, including ways to meet the needs of individuals who do not drive; have safe sidewalks and convenient access to shopping; and offer recreational opportunities and basic services.
