The Town of Caledon has been working towards becoming an Age-Friendly Community since the implementation of the Adult 55+ Strategic Plan in 2015. This plan outlined the first of many steps towards Caledon providing the supports and resources required for residents to age in place. The Town’s residents advocated for the municipality’s support as the number of residents in Caledon age 55 and over is expected to increase by over 10,000 persons by the year 2031. Acknowledging the need, in 2020 the Town approved funding to hire a consultant to continue the development of the Adult 55+ Strategic Plan and transition the deliverables into an Age-Friendly Action Plan. The Age-Friendly Caledon Action Plan (the Plan) was developed and approved by council in May of 2021. The Plan identifies a series of strategic directions and activities that Caledon will be prioritizing to support and encourage becoming a community that is inclusive, respectful, and accessible to all ages and abilities. Older adults now represent the fastest growing segment of the population.

Since May 2021 the Plan has been in the implementation stage of development with successful projects such as the Snow Removal Financial Assistance Program, Tax Subsidy Program, Older Adult Home Safety Program, Monthly eNewsletters, a Health and Wellness Ambassador Program, development of a localized Elder Abuse Prevention Network and Collaborative, annual celebrations and recognitions for Seniors Month in June, International Day of Older Adults, and World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. Staff and volunteers work closely with community services, non-profit organizations, clubs and businesses to help ensure that Caledon is a safe, welcoming, and inclusive community that celebrates the diverse needs of all residents regardless of age.
