The Municipality of Tonalá is committed to the social well-being and healthy aging of older persons. Therefore, it has developed strategic activities in which the needs of older individuals have been prioritized.

The Municipality of Tonalá has carried out the following activities to benefit older adults:

  1. Citizen dialogues in which the general public, and in particular older people, are heard in order to address basic service needs.
  2. Fairs, exhibitions, workshops and festivals are held where older adults of the municipality participate actively, encouraging recreation and social inclusion.
  3. The Municipality of Tonalá has a Center for Comprehensive Care for older people where, in collaboration with other public and private institutions, lectures, talks, legal advice and links to other services are provided.
  4. In collaboration with the Secretary of Tourism of the Government of Jalisco there have been raffles for free tourist trips to different municipalities of the interior of the state, offered exclusively to older people.
  5. For the first time, the Government of Tonalá implemented a comprehensive Health Care Program for older people, serving more than 900 adults through the provision of basic medical and nutritional services, including vaccines against tetanus, hepatitis and pneumococcus, as well as feelings and emotional management workshops (mental health).
  6. The “Opening Spaces” Program has been implemented, which is intended to support older adults in obtaining decent and well-paid work, which contributes to the independence of older adults in the municipality.
  7. The municipality helps connect older adults to social programs of the Federal Government and the Government of the State of Jalisco with the objective of strengthening the participation of the elderly in economic and social development.
  8. Representation of older adults is promoted by selecting a municipal ambassador, with the purpose of generating inclusion and integral participation in the projects and activities within the municipality.
  9. The free sidewalk program has been implemented in the municipality of Tonalá,  positively impacting people with disabilities and older adults by increasing the accessibility of public spaces.
  10. Discounts and economic incentives for older adults have been implemented in some services and taxation
  11. The “Together Building the Future” program, which consists of the rejuvenation of public spaces, has had a positive impact on older people within the municipality of Tonalá. They benefit not only from the beautification of these areas but also, from the use and full enjoyment of them.
