Committed To Becoming More Age-Friendly
Thiruvananthapuram India
Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation is firmly committed to creating an inclusive and supportive environment for its growing older adult population. The city is advancing policies and initiatives that promote holistic well-being, active participation, and improved quality of life, while systematically addressing the eight domains of age-friendliness outlined by the World Health Organization.
Aligned with the UN Decade of Healthy Ageing (2021–2030), the Corporation’s efforts span the four global action areas.
Combatting Ageism: Thiruvananthapuram is fostering a culture of respect and inclusion for older adults, encouraging their participation in civic life and employment. These efforts challenge stereotypes and recognize the wisdom and experience older adults bring to society.
Creating Age-Friendly Environments: The city is making outdoor spaces and buildings safer and more accessible. Initiatives include age-friendly parks, new older adult clubs, and a proposal for free KSRTC bus travel for citizens over 70, funded by the Corporation. Diverse housing options and opportunities for social, cultural, and recreational engagement are also being prioritized to strengthen community belonging.
Person-Centred Care and Health Services: The Vayomithram project, run with the Kerala Social Security Mission, provides mobile clinics, free medicines, palliative care, and help desk services for older adults. The Corporation has also proposed making hospitals more age-friendly and is committed to ensuring accessible communication channels that bridge digital divides.
Access to Long-Term Care: The Sayamprabha Project offers day-care facilities, physiotherapy, nutritious food, and vocational activities to reduce isolation and promote well-being. The Vathilpadi Sevanam (Doorstep Service) delivers government services directly to homes, addressing mobility challenges.
For 2024–25, ₹12.15 crore has been earmarked for the welfare of older adults, with a clear vision of making Thiruvananthapuram a fully age-friendly capital within five years.
