Talagante has a set policy focused on the rights of older people, aimed at positive aging and facilitating priority access for the elderly to services and programs that benefit them. This policy demonstrates a paradigm shift in the citizen/municipality relationship in Talagante and promotes urban and rural environments that are safe, friendly and inclusive.

Public spaces have been adapted, with wide and non-slip sidewalks and lowered in the corners to facilitate the movement of wheelchairs, and with touchscreen tiles in routes near the civic district, public medical centers and neighborhoods with large elderly populations. Street lighting has been improved according to the required standards and additional benches have been added to roads with the greatest foot traffic. For housing, priority is given to older adults for one-story homes. The older population’s active participation in the commune is encouraged through clubs that offer activities with disease prevention or palliative objectives, in addition to recreational activities. The city also plans celebrations of special dates and milestones that are free of charge to the elderly.

With regard to health services, an integrated system has been created that eliminates barriers to accessing public health services. This system includes a medical call center and free transport to health centers for older persons. In addition, home visits programs are offered to people aged 75 or older that are bedridden.

Since June 15, 2018, a local campaign has been promoted for good treatment and respect for the elderly. The campaign’s main objective is to combat ageism and get rid of the negative image that the inhabitants of Talagante currently perceive about aging.
