Committed To Becoming More Age-Friendly
Taebaek City Republic of Korea
In 2025, Taebaek City launched its inaugural Three-Year Action Plan for an Age-Friendly City, guided by the vision: “Taebaek, a premier age-friendly city where seniors can enjoy a fulfilling life”. Scheduled for implementation from 2025 to 2028, the plan outlines a total of 114 action plans, encompassing 4 major policy goals, 5 strategies and 18 policy tasks. These 114 action plans span 6 bureaus, 26 divisions, and 47 teams within Taebaek City’s administration and address all domains outlined in the WHO guide.
Since 2005, Taebaek City has actively operated the Taebaek Community Security Council, a public–private partnership that brings together government officials, field experts, and senior citizens. To further strengthen the foundation for building an age-friendly city, the city established a dedicated Senior Policy and Care Team in July 2025 and secured specialized staff, with the Taebaek City Ordinance on Supporting the Creation of an Age-Friendly City set to be enacted in October. Furthermore, in 2025, Taebaek City distinguished itself as the first basic local government in Korea to implement a pilot Age-Friendly Impact Assessment (draft) for municipal officials. Since 2020, Taebaek City has actively operated the Taebaek Senior Policy Monitoring Group, which enables seniors to take part in the policymaking process and suggest improvements. Notably, as Taebaek has the highest proportion of elderly living alone (30.1%) among the province’s 18 municipalities, the group has concentrated its efforts on preventing depression and dementia stemming from social isolation, while also working to raise public awareness. Furthermore, since the launch of the 8th popularly elected administration in the second half of 2022, the Mayor of Taebaek has made regular visits to 105 senior community centers twice a year (once in each half-year period), totaling five rounds of visits to date, in order to actively gather feedback on seniors’ living environments and everyday inconveniences.
Taebaek City will strive to promote age-friendly cities ensuring a livable living environment, a vibrant aging, stable aging without income gaps, and reliable care for a healthy aging.
Moving forward, we will continue to collaborate closely with the international community to develop tailored age-friendly policies and promote the sustainable development of cities worldwide.
