Swansea is strengthening its commitment to becoming part of the WHO Global Network of Age Friendly Cities and Communities, recognising the need to prepare for a growing population of older residents. The city is adopting a forward looking approach that brings together policy, partnership working and community insight. Its Age Friendly Action Plan sits alongside Welsh Government priorities, the agenda of the Older People’s Commissioner for Wales and Swansea Council’s ambitions for inclusive, resilient communities.

A defining aspect of Swansea’s approach is the way older people help steer the work. Through regular engagement sessions, conversations in neighbourhood settings and collaborative spaces involving partners from across the city, older residents shape what matters most. A renewed multi agency Steering Group will bring these perspectives together, supporting co-ordinated action across the eight WHO domains.

The programme covers a wide spectrum of initiatives designed to support later life. Improvements to public spaces, community venues and key local centres aim to create environments that are easier to navigate and enjoy. Transport access remains a core priority, with efforts focused on supported travel options and community led solutions. Housing work emphasises safety, adaptability and the ability to age well at home. Digital participation, informal learning and skills based activities help people remain included and connected. Health and wellbeing initiatives, ranging from dementia support and falls prevention to intergenerational projects, are strengthened through close partnership across health, social care and voluntary organisations.

Across council departments, age friendly principles are being embedded into everyday practice. Working alongside Swansea Bay UHB, community groups and local organisations, the city is committed to clear, bilingual and accessible communication. Together, these efforts are shaping a Swansea where older people can lead connected, confident and fulfilling lives.
