The City of Sur places great importance on the care of older citizens through an integrated package of health and social services, in partnership with the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Social Development, as well as civil society institutions and the private sector.

In the health sector, regular medical follow-up services are provided to older adult citizens through health centers and the regional referral hospital. These services include periodic check-ups, monitoring of chronic diseases, and home care for those whose health conditions prevent them from visiting medical facilities. Home care teams also provide assistive medical devices such as wheelchairs, walkers, and canes, in addition to health, psychological, and social counseling.

On the social side, the Ministry of Social Development, through the Department of Senior Citizens Affairs, implements programs and plans aimed at enhancing the quality of life for older adults. These include organizing social, cultural, and recreational activities, supporting families in caring for older adult members at home, and providing housing adaptations for low-income families to ensure a safe and comfortable environment. The Ministry also provides financial and in-kind assistance for special and emergency cases.

Civil society organizations, such as the Omani Women’s Association and the Charity and Communication Committee, play a pivotal role in organizing events, raising awareness of issues older adults face, and strengthening community partnerships. Building and public facility adaptation standards have also been adopted to make them more age-friendly, along with expanding the volunteer support network to serve them.

These efforts reflect the City of Sur’s commitment to creating an age-friendly environment in line with the standards of the World Health Organization, through the integration of healthcare and social support, ensuring a dignified life for older adult citizens and reinforcing their role and status in society.
