Sullivan’s citizens have actively initiated some programs to address the needs of the community by addressing the various domains identified in the “Essential Features of Age-friendly Cities”. All will need to be reviewed using the WHO checklist. Outdoor Spaces: With the leadership of the Frenchman’s Bay Conservancy, hiking trails have been developed and mapped. With leadership from the Library, weekly walks (Monday 5pm, Tuesday & Thursday 1pm) on flat
surface at the Rec Center have been continuing for a year. The Sunrise Trail (86 mile rails to trail project) runs through Sullivan offering a flat trail available year-round. A public beach and boat ramp on local lake provides swimming, fishing & boating opportunities in the summer, with ice fishing, snowmobiling, snowshoe and cross-country skiing opportunities in the winter. Transportation is a major barrier as there is no public transportation. Housing stock is primarily single-family, old and needs to be assessed for aging-in-place opportunities. Social participation opportunities include: Library, Recreation Center, Adult & Community Education,
Historical Society, Churches, public suppers, etc. More is needed and desired. Respect and Social inclusion needs to be assessed and improved. Civic participation is primarily by seniors and retirees; while very few employment opportunities exist within the community borders. Communication and Information — Sullivan recently established a new website www.sullivanmaine.org and Facebook page. More is needed and desired. Community and health services — currently, all residents must travel to neighboring communities to access
healthcare and social services. The community recently became a “Heart Safe” community with assistance of the volunteer fire department.
