Over the last few years and in the continuity of its solidarity program, Strasbourg has been developing age-friendly policies to foster the autonomy of its seniors and ease their everyday life.

In 2010, three major levers for action were defined:
– Give the seniors a role in the city life by reinforcing their citizenship
– Promote their well-being and enable aging in good conditions
– Fight against isolation and insecurity

To reach these ambitious goals, Strasbourg conducts projects in different fields of the city. A first and key project is to make the public transport network fully accessible to disabled people, a target already completed for the tramway of Strasbourg which was the first one in France to reach this level of accessibility. Other actions are taken in the fields of housing and health, but also of culture and sports for Strasbourg to be not only an adapted environment but also a great place to age.

As a result of the progress made, Strasbourg was awarded an “age-friendly city” certification from the French government in October 2013.

Animations around this theme are regularly offered by the city and include conferences, workshops and exhibitions. Part of a bigger animation program, these events are opened to all citizens and offer a place of encounter for different generations.

Nobody knows better than the seniors themselves what they need to improve their living conditions. This is why consultations with them are regularly organised in the different districts of the city to establish the priorities and make them a full part of the change process.

On its journey to change, Strasbourg can also rely on the valued support of external partners which are Department du Bas-Rhin (local authority), Agence Regionale de la Santé (regional health agency), associations supporting seniors, the public transport company, health professionals, the university of Strasbourg and many others.
