The goal and core value of Seongdong-gu is to realize a ‘Smart Inclusive City’, where all the inhabitants live more comfortably without anyone being alienated. This is inline with the visions of the Global Network for Age-Friendly Cities and Communities, which aims to create an urban environment where citizens of all generations, including older adults, can live together.

5 strategic objectives including, Sustainablity, Mobility, Activity, Housing and Inclusion have been established. In order to fulfill these 5 strategic objectives, the 8 guidelines proposed by WHO were selected as execution areas, and a total of 36 projects from each domain are to be completed by 2022.

  • It is important to understand the traffic and road conditions in Seongdong-gu and set up objectives to reduce inequality. This will help to settle the relative deprivation of residents.
  • For active communication and information sharing, the city plans to create monitoring groups that will allow older adults to participate in policy development and propose their own ideas/opinions.
  • As for respect and social integration, the Seongdong playground and a talk concert will be created for harmonization of all generations, including older adults.
  • To further increase social participation, older adults can garner points through volunteer work which can be used or donated in exchange for public services.
  • For outdoor spaces and buildings, Seongdong-gu is attempting to create resting shelters for older adults.
