Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) is deeply committed to creating an age-friendly environment that aligns with its visionary “Petaling Jaya Smart, Sustainable, and Resilient 2030” (PJSSR 2030) Blueprint. The blueprint emphasizes five key directions: Clean and Green Environment, Livable Habitat, Competitive Economy, Sustainable Community, and Good Governance, supported by 10 Thematic Projects, including the Inclusive City initiative.

Under the Inclusive City framework, MBPJ has developed the Petaling Jaya Senior Citizen Action Plan 2030, focusing on five key pillars: Health, Economy, Social & Safety, Education, and Environment. This plan integrates principles from global, national, and state policies, including the United Nations for the Elderly, the 12th Malaysia Plan (RMK-12), and the Selangor State Plan (RS-1), ensuring a comprehensive approach to empowering older adults.

To ensure effective implementation, MBPJ has established a special committee tasked with monitoring, evaluating, and discussing the progress of the Petaling Jaya Senior Citizen Action Plan 2030. This committee comprises representatives from government agencies, the private sector, NGOs, and community members, ensuring that the plan remains dynamic and responsive to the needs of senior citizens.

MBPJ’s key initiatives include:

1. Policies and Guidelines: Establishing special guidelines for Senior Citizen Care Homes and ensuring sufficient facilities for older adults across Petaling Jaya.

2. Accessible Infrastructure: Adopting universal design guidelines for new development projects and retrofitting existing infrastructure, including town centers, public parks, pedestrian walkways, bus stops, and public facilities, to enhance accessibility.

3. Accessible Public Transportation: Providing the free PJ City Bus, which is universally accessible, catering to older persons and persons with disabilities (PWDs).

4. Health and Wellness Programs: Partnering with health institutions to offer mobile clinics, health screenings, and awareness campaigns focusing on geriatric health.

5. Social Engagement: Organizing intergenerational activities, cultural events, workshops, and safety programs to promote active aging and social inclusion.

6. Digital Inclusion: Conducting digital literacy programs to empower older adults with essential technology skills.

7. Economic Support: Implementing programs for financial management, capacity building, income generation, and providing special allocations for older adults.

8. Education and Lifelong Learning: Collaborating with NGOs, universities, and corporations to offer technology education, community club activities, and lifelong learning opportunities for older adults.

By joining the WHO Global Network for Age-Friendly Cities and Communities, MBPJ seeks to strengthen these initiatives further by adopting global best practices, fostering knowledge exchange, and collaborating with international stakeholders to create a resilient, inclusive, and age-friendly Petaling Jaya.
