Committed To Becoming More Age-Friendly
Penetanguishene Canada
To date the Town of Penetanguishene has engaged in several age-friendly changes to policy, planning, programs, communications, and more.
Since 2022; a committee of Council was established (Wellbeing and Accessibility Committee) to champion the Town’s Age-Friendly Plan (2021-2026). This committee is consulted for all new community planning initiatives, most recently the Recreation, Parks and Trails Strategy and Town Dock Secondary Plan. The Town’s Age-Friendly Plan is considered in all new developments.
The Town continues to support low-income seniors with access to programs and services with an affordable and sustainable housing Community Improvement Plan, the Access to Affordable Recreation Policy, and a new funding partnership with the Older Adults’ Centre Association of Ontario for Social Prescribing. In 2023, transit services for individuals 65+ became free.
Accessibility has been improved to many trails with resurfacing initiatives and the addition of multiple seating areas.
In 2025, the Town secured funding and opened a Seniors Active Living Centre, providing a community hub for information and increased access to programming for seniors. The Town has created partnerships to offer intergenerational programming through day camps, digital literacy programs with the Gateway Centre for Learning, and regular aquafit programs at the Waypoint Centre for Mental Health.
The Town continues to improve promotion and communication strategies including accessibility improvements to the Town’s website, host annual Seniors’ Information day and BBQ events, participate in the North Simcoe Seniors Directory, promote 211 (provincial information centre) in Town mailouts and online, and ensures volunteer positions and job postings for the Town have been shared on all channels (print and virtual).
The Town is committed to continuing to implement The Age-Friendly Plan to create a community where individuals of all ages can thrive.
