Committed To Becoming More Age-Friendly
Občina Žiri Slovenia
Efforts for quality aging in the Municipality of Žiri go back many years, when, as part of the search for a solution for a local home for older people, the municipality joined the Cluster of Small Houses project in 2015 and, at the invitation of the Anton Trstenjak Institute, also joined the national network of Age-Friendly Cities and Municipalities. At that time, the Honorary Committee was also established, which was later renamed the Local Action Group for an Age-Friendly Municipality, which serves as a consultative body in the area of older people in the municipality.
The municipality had a vision of a home that would provide accommodation for its aging residents. The idea of the home became a reality in May 2022, when the home opened its doors. The investor and operator of the Žiri Home for Senior Citizens is the private company SeneCura, based in Vienna.
At the initiative of the Institute, the municipality decided to join the path of international integration and, as part of the TAAFE project, continued to develop an environment for quality life and healthy aging in the locality according to the most modern findings from abroad. After the completion of the project, members of the local action group addressed an initiative to the municipality to continue systematic and sustainable work in the field of aging within the framework of the development of an age-friendly municipality strategy and its implementation.
In the municipality of Žiri, there are active associations and other civil organizations with their programs for healthy and high-quality aging to help citizens in need of long-term care and to help with intergenerational integration of the people in the municipal community. Here we are mainly referring to the activities carried out through DU Žiri, KO Red Cross, Društvo kmečkih žena, Župnija Žiri.
In Žiri, a group of informal carers meets once a month, aimed at providing mutual support in caregiving, as well as obtaining information that informal caregivers need.
Furthermore, 4 self-help older people groups operate within the OZ Rdeči križ Žiri. All leaders are volunteers, driven and dedicated to their work. The municipality also supports the establishment of social volunteering in Elderly Home Žiri combined with training for social volunteering at home. Purpose of the volunteering is in relieving the burden on relatives of and reducing loneliness.
Municipality of Žiri is member of Slovenian Network of Age-Friendly Cities and Municipalities as well as the WHO Global Network of Age-Friendly Cities and Communities.
