The Municipality of Domžale strives to follow the slogan »The Place of Cheerful People” in all areas, including the area of care for the older people. In addition to its legal obligations, the municipality pays special attention to providing funds for programs run by local pensioners’ associations and similar organizations, as well as programs offered by other associations and organizations in various sectors (such as disability, social humanitarian, sports, and cultural associations) that are intended for older people. As part of its (co)founding rights, the Municipality of Domžale supports programs for older people implemented by the Domžale Health Center, Domžale Library, France Bernik Cultural Center, primary schools, and other institutions through intergenerational cooperation.
Special attention is given to socially vulnerable residents, including older people. In addition to the help provided by state social work centers, socially vulnerable older residents can also access municipal aid under certain conditions. The municipality funds programs through the Regional Red Cross Association and offers municipal financial assistance.

Since 2021, the municipality Domžale has co-financed a free transportation program for older residents, operated by volunteers from the local Domžale Pensioners’ Association. Eligible for free transportation are residents of Domžale municipality over the age of 65 who receive social welfare or supplementary benefits, or whose pension does not exceed the annually determined amount.

In its commitment to older people, the Municipality of Domžale further confirmed its dedication in 2023 when the municipal council approved the “Together for a Better Old Age” Strategy 2023-2028. A consultative body, the Council for the Elderly, composed of representatives from local associations, organizations, and institutions working in this field, was established by the mayor and regularly monitors the implementation of the strategy. Traditional events for older people, such as the June pensioners’ gathering in Domžale and the Festival for the Third Age in Cankarjev dom, Ljubljana, held at the end of September, are also supported. Pensioners’ associations are always welcome to participate at events held during the celebration of the municipal day and other municipal activities.
In 2024, the Municipality of Domžale joined the Slovenian Network of Age-Friendly Cities and Municipalities, as well as the WHO Global Network of Age-Friendly Cities and Communities.
