Committed To Becoming More Age-Friendly
Newport, Gwent Wales
Newport is a vibrant and diverse city in South Wales, with a population of 159,600 people. Among them, there are more than 27.000 people aged 65 and over, who contribute to the social, economic and cultural life of the city. Newport values its older residents and recognises the challenges they may face as they age.
Newport’s initiative to become an Age Friendly City began with the signing of the Dublin declaration, which commits to enhancing the lives of older people. Officially committing in October 2023, the views of older adults regarding what matters to them as they age, and the domains of age friendliness were gathered to help shape Newport on it journey to becoming an age friendly city.
Engagement feedback and partnership working has enabled the development of the age friendly delivery plan to ensure that older peoples voices are considered when decisions are made and are a mechanism of sharing practice across the domains, such as digital inclusion, inter generational practice, informal carers support and dementia friendly program.
Newport wishes to fulfil its commitment to creating an age friendly community through achieving the goals set out within the delivery plan, to create a place where age is not an obstacle to ageing well. Through working in partnerships, we aim to provide older people with the tools to feel empowered to make their own decisions regarding what matters to them and have their voices heard when developing policies.
The work of the age friendly steering and subgroups and their wider partners will encourage services, older people’s forums and community groups to develop projects that are both age friendly and dementia friendly. Through undertaking continual engagement and involvement of older people we can fulfil our commitments and create opportunities for social interaction, encouraging participation in activities, and promoting a sense of purpose and belonging. Creating a place that is inclusive and provides opportunities for all.
