The municipality of Pivka strives towards the implementation of various programs for older adults. A range of individual programs have been actively carried out for many years now. The first program that we decided to work on was a program called “Elderly people for Elderly people” (Slovene: Starejši za starejše). The project has been implemented in collaboration with the Pivka Seniors’ Association. The prime purpose of this project is to strengthen both the cooperation and organization of assistance to older people over the age of sixty-nine in order to maintain quality life in their home environment. The project located in the municipality of Pivka has been actively run since 2008.

Additionally a project entitled “Transportation for the elderly” (Slovene: Prevozi za starejše) has been active since April 2018 with the support of the Sopotnik Institute. It is an inter-generational program aimed at preventing the isolation and loneliness of older adults from remote places or villages with poor transportation infrastructure. Transportation is provided by volunteer drivers of different ages and professions. This program also aims to prevent and alleviate the hardships and barriers facing older adults, with an overall aim of reducing the risk of poverty. Among other objectives the program seeks to increase social inclusion and volunteering.

The Pivka Intergenerational Centre program (Slovene: Večgeneracijski center Pivka) started operations in 2017. The centre was designed based upon the needs demonstrated in the local environment. The program aims to connect different generations in the exchange of knowledge, skills and interpersonal relations. The centre currently pairs nursery school children and older adults and regularly operates twice a week.

In 2019 we joined the age-friendly municipalities in Slovenia and together designed an age-friendly municipality action group. We further expect and strive to increase the availability of programs for older adults. For instance, in 2019 we held lectures for family caregivers of older people. We have also started training volunteers in the development of age-friendly programming.

We strongly believe that these projects will continue to contribute to an Age-friendly community.
