The Toa Baja community currently has programs or services that address the seven domains established by the World Health Organization (WHO) adopted by AARP. We have implemented several policies and programs specifically targeting our senior population. One of the key programs is the Elderly Assistance Program, which provides access to medical services, social assistance, and recreational activities. We have also established a collaborative agreement with the Alzheimer’s Association and Proyecto Plenitud to offer a support group for caregivers of patients with dementia, providing comprehensive support to caregivers. The municipal trolley public and collective transportation service provides transportation to citizens free of
charge. This service includes the option of paratransit for people with functional diversity. On the other hand, the Office of Elderly Affairs offers recreational and food services to seniors in its day center. Other services such as the “Housekeepers” provide direct help in the homes of this population that needs support from the community. Through municipal ordinances, it was established to convert all existing streets into complete streets, providing the opportunity for transportation alternatives and ensuring pedestrian safety.

During hurricane season, we guaranteed the continuity and activation of community centers and support organizations to ensure the efficient distribution of resources and assistance in emergency situations. In addition, we have coordinated the delivery of electric generators to bedridden people or people with chronic health conditions over 60 years of age, funded by federal Coronavirus State and Local Fiscal Recovery funds, under the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA).

To become a more age-friendly community, we plan to improve urban infrastructure to make it more accessible, including the construction of sidewalks and ramps, and the implementation of clear signage. We will also develop accessible transportation programs to facilitate access to essential services. In addition, we plan to launch a more robust intergenerational support system, involving young volunteers to offer assistance and companionship to older adults. Our goal is to create an inclusive and supportive environment that promotes the health, well-being and social participation of our seniors. This is why each service provided and the projects in progress or future seek to adapt our city to a more friendly one.
