In Malmö’s work towards becoming age-friendly, the focus will be on raising awareness of ageing and ageism and how they intersect with other demographics, increasing knowledge of existing services available to older adults. Overall, the goal is to increase knowledge among the city’s departments to implement age-friendly practices.

The city aims to involve vulnerable older groups through reference groups for consultation in various types of work. Methods will include interviews, surveys, and observational studies.

Previously, technical departments focused on children and young people. They now plan to apply these lessons to older adult populations, with an emphasis on educational measures and urban environment improvements.

Malmö has several policies and projects targeting older adults. For instance, Malmö City’s Housing Provision Program 2022-2026 outlines guidelines for housing provision, considering residents’ diverse needs. A specific strategy for housing for older adults is being developed as part of this work.

The Ombudsman for older adults of Malmö summarizes issues and challenges faced by older adults based on conversations and meetings, compiled in an report every two years. The Ombudsman also provides feedback on observations and identified areas for improvement to the operations and management of the Health, Care, and Welfare Administration.

Malmö offers various health-promoting and preventive services and activities. There are several Meeting Places across the city, open to all older adults without membership. They are all welcoming to LGBTQI, and offer free activities like gymnastics, bridge, live music, book clubs, lectures, mindfulness, painting, and IT education. Older adults can also use or borrow tablets and computers on-site. Other services include handyman services, IT assistance at home, companion service, respite care, and daycare centers for people with dementia.
