Since being accredited an Age-Friendly Municipality in 2013, Longueuil has carried out several projects aimed at promoting active aging among older adults.
One of the cornerstones of the initial action plan was the introduction of free public transit during off-peak hours for individuals aged 65 and over. In keeping with the goal of helping seniors maintain their independence, the municipality (through the Agglomération de Longueuil’s police department) also contributed to funding for the Pair Program (automated daily phone call to check on isolated older people). More than 700 seniors are enrolled in this program and receive a call every day from the telephone center, 7 days a week.

Several other projects have also been proposed to encourage older adults to take part in recreational activities, including an at-home library service launched in four older age residences, where older adults are directly involved in the project, working voluntarily, especially for the recruitment of additional members. We also have a week of free activities held in partnership with community organizations, and the retrofitting of sports facilities used by older aged groups.

In 2018, Longueuil adopted its second action plan, under which the city will amend its municipal by-laws to encourage the development of housing units and residences that meet the needs of older adults and their families. Mobility needs will also be taken into consideration in the planning process surrounding street parking and pedestrian travel. In this action plan, the city has also committed to developing attractive living environments for older citizens, namely by renovating several of its recreational facilities and building a new recreational center for older adults.
