Committed To Becoming More Age-Friendly
Kuala Lumpur Malaysia
As of the most recent estimates, Kuala Lumpur has a population of approximately 2.04 million people, with about 9.2% classified as older adults. By 2040, this percentage is expected to grow significantly, with older adults projected to make up 17.3% of the city’s population, which will reach an estimated 2.35 million. This demographic shift presents new challenges and opportunities in planning for a more inclusive and supportive urban environment.
Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has formulated the Kuala Lumpur Structure Plan 2040 (PSKL 2040), which outlines the city’s long-term development goals. The plan is built around five key pillars: transportation and traffic, housing, communities and social well-being, public spaces and facilities, and social participation. While the PSKL 2040 does not exclusively focus on older adults, it does incorporate actions that take the ageing population into account across these strategic areas.
To strengthen efforts towards becoming an age-friendly city, we believe that joining the WHO Global Network of Age-Friendly Cities is a crucial step forward. Through this global platform, Kuala Lumpur can enhance its planning and implementation of initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life for older residents.
Participation in this network will also allow the city to expand its collaborations, build strategic partnerships, and share best practices with other cities around the world that are working toward similar goals. This will be vital in ensuring that Kuala Lumpur evolves into a city that supports active ageing and inclusivity for all generations.
