Committed To Becoming More Age-Friendly
Kota Samarahan Municipal Council Malaysia
Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) is actively moving towards becoming a more age-friendly municipality by implementing various programmes and initiatives that respond to the needs, well-being and participation of senior citizens. These initiatives include organising activities and programmes specifically for older people, upgrading public infrastructure and facilitiesto improve accessibility, mobility and safety as well as conductiong health and wellness programmes to promote healthy and active ageing. MPKS also supports digital inclusion among senior citizens through basic computer and digital literacy programmes, enabling them to gain greater confidence in using technology, accessing digital services and staying connected with family, friends and the wider community.
In addition MPKS currently planning to establish an activity centre specifically for senior citizens by repurposing the existing abandoned bus station. The proposed centre could provide a dedicated, safe and accessible space for senior citizens to participate in recreational, sosial, educational, health, digital and community-based activities. It could also serve as a platform for older people to interact, share their experiences and skills, and participate actively in community life.
The establishment of this centre would further strengthen community support networks and encourage greater interaction between senior citizens and other generations. It could promote intergenerational activities, volunteerism and knowledge sharing, while reducing social isolation among older people. The centre could also provide opportunities for senior citizens to remain physically active, socially connected and mentally engaged. Through these initiatives, MPKS can continue to create an inclusive community where older people are valued, supported and empowered to contribute meaningfully to the development of Kota Samarahan.
