The goal of the Honolulu county, AARP Hawaii, WHO and its local partners is to develop Honolulu into a great place to live, play and work for all ages. The City and County of Honolulu joined the WHO Global Network of Age-friendly Cities and Communities in 2013, and the Honolulu City Council passed a resolution unanimously to support this initiative. The Steering Committee is comprised of key community leaders including:
• Honolulu Director of Transportation Services – Michael Formby (Co-chair)
• Honolulu Director of Planning and Permitting – George Atta
• Honolulu Director of Community Service s- Pam Witty-Oakland
• Honolulu Deputy Director of the Office of Managing Director – Georgette Deemer
• Honolulu City Council member – Ann Kobayashi
• University of Hawaii Emeritus Professor of the Department of Urban & Regional Planning – Tom Dinell (Co-chair)
• AARP Hawaii State Director – Barbara Kim Stanton
• Kaiser Permanente Director, Community Benefit & Health Policy – Joy Barua
• Better Blocks and AARP volunteer – Linda Schatz
• Honolulu Transportation Commissioner – John Goody
• U.S. Dept. of HUD – Ramona Mallahey
• former headmaster of Kamehameha Schools – Mike Chun (Co-chair of Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC))
• Hawaii Chamber of Commerce CEO – Sherry Menor-McNamara (Co-chair of CAH)
• Kaiser Permanente President – Janet Liang (Co-chair of CAC)
A number of key actions have been executed, such as:
1) A survey that was initiated in conjunction with AARP and expected to be completed by mid-May;
2) Raising $120,000 (Kaiser Permanente committed $100,000 as the title sponsor);
3) the establishment of the Technical Data committee from State and County resources;
4) The CAC’s kick-off with 80+ community members;
5) Securing Hawaii Pacific University as our fiscal sponsor;
6) Issuing a contract with the UH’s Centre on Ageing.
