The City currently provides a building for the Eastport Senior Center as well as an annual stipend to assist with any expenditures (FY 16 donation was $8,750). The City has instituted a revolving fund for retrofitting furnaces for low to moderate income elderly residents. Eastport City Hall staff maintains a vegetable garden for residents to obtain fresh vegetables. Many Seniors are actively engaged in City Boards and committees and perform volunteer services in the community gardens, the community dog park, welcoming the cruise ships, and other opportunities. Community volunteers shovel snow for the homebound and elderly, there are free digital literacy classes held at the Peavey Memorial Library, and a free mini-bus which takes Seniors to Calais, the nearest service center. Even with a great number of resources available from other community organizations, there is a prevailing silo effect which needs to be eliminated in order to best serve the Senior population.
