Committed To Becoming More Age-Friendly
Eastern region of Singapore Singapore
The Eastern region of Singapore, which includes Bedok, Changi, Marine Parade and Tampines, has developed and implemented a range of programs and services to support older adults in aging well within their community. Aligned with the World Health Organisation (WHO) Age-friendly Cities Framework, these efforts focus on care, contribution and connectedness. By emphasizing preventative healthcare, active aging programs and accessible care services, older adults are empowered to take an active role in their aging journey. Programs that promote life-long learning, volunteering and employment further ensure that seniors can remain active contributors to their communities. To foster social participation, the region has leveraged the built environment to offer dedicated spaces for interactions and group activities. Additionally, intergenerational programs help foster meaningful relationships between older adults and younger residents, promoting mutual respect and understanding.
Developing an age-friendly city requires coordinated, cross-sectoral and interdisciplinary efforts at multiple levels. The region plans to engage relevant government ministries and agencies, healthcare institutions, community partners and academic institutions to advance new strategies while strengthening existing resources. To drive innovation, the region will:
1. Develop and integrate technological innovations across multiple WHO Age-friendly Cities domains.
2. Advance behavioural and implementation science research to design effective interventions, ensuring adoption, scalability and sustainability of initiatives.
3. Enhance data analytics for age-friendly services to anticipate service demands and provide personalised support services.
To optimise existing resources, the region will:
1. Strengthen grassroots networks and community organizations to provide more opportunities for older adults to engage with their community.
2. Expand cross-sector collaborations to provide comprehensive support for older adults’ physical, mental and social needs.
3. Educate the wider workforce on the principles of age-friendliness to foster a more inclusive environment.
This approach aims to make the Eastern region of Singapore more age-friendly, ensuring that seniors in the East age healthily, stay connected and actively contribute to their communities at every stage of their aging journey.
