The City of Orangeburg was founded by an Indian trader named George Sterling in 1704. The town was named in honor of William IV, Prince of Orange the husband of Princess Anne daughter of George II of England. The City of Orangeburg was incorporated in 1883. It encompasses approximately 8.5 square miles and boasts a population of 13,563 citizens, according to the US Census Bureau’s 2006 estimates.The County of Orangeburg exists for the purpose of providing a prosperous and healthy environment for its citizens. It seeks to create a positive leadership and the development of policies consistent with the present and future needs of the community. The County strives to be accountable to its citizens by providing the most effective and efficient services possible.

The County currently has an office on aging that performs many services for seniors. The County Library and several senior centers provide services. The County has the Orangeburg Area Development Centers which provide services for all ages. The County has performed a pedestrian and cycling plan to accommodate for all ages. The County would like to enhance the community where it is able to make it more livable and age friendly.
