Alameda County is home to over 1.5 million people living in 14 incorporated cities as well as in six unincorporated communities and rural areas throughout the 813 square miles of the County.
The County of Alameda government contains a number of units dedicated to better understanding the needs of older adults and serving their needs, including: the Social Services Agency’s (SSA) Department of Adult and Aging Services as well as the local Area Agency on Aging, housed within SSA; an Older Adults Workgroup convened by the Health Care Services Agency (HCSA); our Advisory Commission on Aging; and the Council for Age-Friendly Communities. Four cities within the County have already embarked on their own age-friendly initiatives, including the Cities of Fremont, Berkeley, Oakland, and Emeryville. Our Age-Friendly County effort intends to support work at the city level, imbue the County’s operations with age-friendly policies, help inform Countywide efforts related to older adults, and provide support and capacity building to nonprofits.
