The Age Friendly Committee was formed in the fall of 2015 with a cross-section of representation from key stakeholders in the community. We have also established four sub-committees of the Age Friendly Committee so we can focus on the core essential components of Age Friendly. The initial task was to brand the committee which we engaged the local high schools in a logo design contest. Several partnerships were formed in 2015-2016 and our first event was held. Two needs assessment surveys were developed to identify a way forward. Two university students did a work term with us to analyze survey results and draft our Needs Assessment document. This has resulted in greater awareness of Age Friendly needs in the community. We continue to host several workshops a year with subjects targeted at the Age Friendly demographic (ie. fall prevention, financial planning, elder abuse, information forums of various local organizations). In 2017, we partnered with 3 other municipalities to organize the first ever Regional Age Friendly conference, we had a sell out event of 300 who came together to brainstorm and share best practices of how we can collectively advance the initiative. We have published an Age Friendly Business Guide and started an Age Friendly Business award program and in 2018 we awarded over 30 business as being Age Friendly. In March 2018 we were recognized as an Age Friendly Community from the Province of Ontario, we are very proud. We have accomplished many things in the last 3 years and we have many more things we want to accomplish.
