In order to create a livable urban environment for all generations regardless of age, Suncheon City has been implementing more than 165 policy tasks which are closely related to the 8 areas suggested by the WHO GNAFCC (Global Network for Age-friendly Cities and Communities).

First, in terms of urban planning, Suncheon City has been implementing various community policies such as;

  • distributing population by setting living zones
  • planning community-based living SOC facilities in accordance with the urban master plan
  • communicating with the administration to find answers to civil requests
  • residents-led public projects with residents’ participation around Suncheon Bay Durunuri

Second, in terms of programs, Suncheon City has been developing and implementing various programs such as;

  • organizing village-level learning communities
  • information education for citizens
  • operating the Happy Learning Village School
  • operating senior citizen’s colleges
  • sympathetic talk projects to improve awareness of those living with disabilities and their experiences without prejudice and discrimination.

Third, in terms of older people as service targets, Suncheon City further subdivided age groups into preliminary seniors (50-64 years old), early seniors (65-74 years old), and late seniors (75 years old or older) so that policies and programs tailored to the characteristics of respective age group can be implemented.

In order to implement the “Suncheon City – A Smart Eco-City Where Aged Life Is Happy and Comfortable in the Era of Life Expectancy of 100 Years!,” the City set 3 goals

  • A pleasant and safe eco-city
  • an inclusive city where diversity is respected
  • and a healthy city with sharing and consideration

Suncheon City has been implementing a total of 49 detailed action plans in 8 major areas as follows:

  • Creating a Safe and Convenient Living Environment (The More e-Green): Creating a city of gardens, creating a quality tree-lined forest road, creating an evergreen street scape, designating and operating toilets for public access, a Happy Nest project for housing renovation for low-income citizens, creating a communal living home for older people, developing safety culture campaigns with citizens, etc.
  • Establishment of a social integration platform (The More e-platform): Operating Culture Day programs, operating enjoyable culture and art programs, revitalizing volunteer work, supporting culture and art activities for generational convergence, offering welfare cards for older people, etc.
  • Improving citizens’ quality of life (The More e-Life): Providing jobs for seniors for healthy and energetic ageing, “Suncheon-style MacGyver project” with citizens’ participation, training senior citizens’ coordinators,  operating the “Suncheon unit of senior citizens alley guard tigers”, operating “the attending physicians for senior citizens” centers, etc.
