The City of La Mesa provides a program called Rides4Neighbors for seniors who are unable to drive. Volunteer drivers take clients to doctor appointments, grocery store or to where ever they may need to go. The program also offers a wheelchair shuttle. The City is in the process of contracting a shopping shuttle and other ride share programs to expand the Rides4Neighbors program. The City also offers a variety of community events throughout the year. We host a Senior Expo, where providers throughout the San Diego region host information booths for their services. Every summer, the La Mesa Park and Recreation Foundation hosts a community summer concert series and movies in the parks. The City of La Mesa’s five year Targets for Actions goals align with the Age-Friendly initiative. Our Targets for Actions goals include the following: providing a safe community; continuing to improve high quality municipal services; revitalizing neighborhoods and corridors; enhancing recreation and quality of life opportunities; facilitating effective and efficient traffic circulation and transportation; and safe and affordable homes for all current and future residents. The City has additional planning documents in place including a Sidewalk Master Plan, an Urban Trails Mobility Action Plan, a Bicycle Master Plan and a Parks Master Plan. The City of La Mesa also recently adopted a Climate Action Plan and is beginning a Vision Zero project to reduce pedestrian and bicycle accidents. The City also facilitates intergenerational programs to bring together older adults and children to bridge the age gap, including the East County Intergenerational Games and an intergenerational Safe Routes to School program. We strive to keep our aging population active and social by offering fitness classes, a walking program and by hosting monthly events, such as dances and lectures, at the Adult Enrichment Center.
