Committed To Becoming More Age-Friendly
State Capital City of Düsseldorf Germany
For years, Düsseldorf has been committed to creating a liveable, supportive and diverse environment for older people. The current action plan Growing old in Düsseldorf is based on the wide range of existing services and support for older adult citizens and focuses on promoting a positive image of ageing. Central to this is the concept of zentren plus, which has been in existence for more than 15 years and consists of 32 contact points throughout the city where citizens aged 55 and over can seek advice and meet others.
An important component is the Municipal Conference on Ageing and Care, which promotes exchange between those involved in older adult work, politics and administration and drives forward the development of needs-based services. The municipal care office serves all Düsseldorf citizens as a central point of contact for questions relating to ageing and care.
The Dementia Network Düsseldorf is another important network that improves care and support for people with dementia and their relatives.
The Senior Citizens’ Council represents the interests of older people in the city and brings their concerns to the attention of city politicians.
Our network partners from various fields work closely together to ensure comprehensive care. This includes, in particular, independent welfare organisations.
Another focus is on cross-departmental planning: here, there is close cooperation with the Housing Office to ensure that care places are taken into account in subsidised housing construction. The aim is also to incorporate care infrastructure requirements into urban planning processes at an early stage.
In addition, the Office for Social Affairs and Youth cooperates with the Cultural Office to create so-called third spaces that promote social participation and community Overall, we want to make Düsseldorf even more liveable for older people and take their needs into account in all planning processes.
