As part of our active ageing promotion policy, we have developed physical activity programmes tailored for the older adult population, as well as Education and Training programmes, notably the Braga Senior Academy, which has around 500 students.

We also conduct outreach initiatives in social services, mental health, and telecare, along with home improvement support and discounts on public transport. The municipality further provides a range of social support to older adults through the Senior Card.

Throughout the municipality, we offer typical services for older people, including social centres, day care centres, residential facilities, and home support services.

Additionally, we have a number of initiatives and projects developed both by the municipality and in partnership with others, such as:
– BragActiva: A physical activity programme specifically designed for the older adult population;
– Red May – Support Network for Older People | Proximity Health and Social Services: An award-winning social action project, publicised nationwide, aimed at people aged 55 and over, which seeks to combat social isolation and improve quality of life. This project offers free neighbourhood services in areas such as social work, nursing, neuropsychology, and psychomotricity;
– Porta Amiga – Toc-Toc: As part of the Teleassistance programme, home visits are conducted with the goal of signposting, monitoring, and/or accompanying older adults living alone or with other older individuals;
– Academia das Gerações: A socio-educational and cultural project designed to promote intergenerational exchange by sharing knowledge and experiences between generations. The aim is for older adult residents, on a voluntary basis, to share their skills, knowledge, and experiences with children and young people in the municipality, fostering multigenerational learning and solidarity.

Our goal is to reduce social isolation and loneliness, enhance well-being, strengthen emotional relationships, increase feelings of security, and extend the time older adults spend living at home, thereby postponing institutionalisation.
Regarding informal carers, a protocol is being developed with the local Association of Informal Carers to establish a carer support office and promote initiatives in this field.
