Housing Aid

Out of Sharjah’s keenness to provide a decent life for its elderly residents, all government departments have adopted a policy of priority for the elderly by launching a number of strategic initiatives. The “Housing Aid” initiative is one of these initiatives, as it was launched in partnership between the Department of Housing and the American University of Sharjah.

The Department of Housing, in its section, allocates rent assistance to elderly families with low incomes until a housing solution is found for them. The Department of Housing, under the directives of the Government of Sharjah, is the entity concerned with providing free housing solutions for the elderly. The department has committed to provide 40 rental assistance that will be implemented in Sharjah age-friendly strategic plan 2021-2023.

On the other hand, the American University of Sharjah has committed to maintenance and furnishing of six elderly homes by student volunteers through the strategic plan 2021-2023.

It is worth noting that the initiative was launched at the beginning of this year 2021, and the number of rental assistance provided to the elderly reached 33, which constitutes 82% of the total assistance. This indicates that the results of the initiative may exceed expectations and cover a larger number than expected in the coming years, and this indicates the success of the initiative.
