Summary
In Akita City, the elderly are entitled to ride a bus at an affordable price of 100 yen to make it easier for them to go out and participate in social life. Riding on buses is central to their daily life. Feedback on the program that was introduced in 2011 has been positive so far with older people showing great appreciation for the simplicity in paying their bus fares and the opportunity of going out more. In order to cover more people, the scope was expanded to those aged 68 or older from 70 or older in 2013, and furthermore, it has been expanded to 65 or older since 2017.
