Canada: City of Kingston Report to Seniors Advisory Committee

Executive Summary
“The Seniors Advisory Committee was appointed by Council on September 20, 2011 with a mandate to develop an “Age-friendly” Plan for the City of Kingston in keeping with the theme and direction of the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Global Network of Age-friendly Cities and Communities. The length of term of the committee was expected to be 12 months and will conclude with the submission of the recommended plan to Council.

The Global Network is an international effort to help cities prepare for two global demographic trends: the rapid ageing of populations and increasing urbanization by targeting the environment, social and economic factors that influence the health and well-being of older adults. The City of Kingston became part of the WHO Global Network of Age-friendly Cities in 2012. The first stage in becoming an age-friendly city is a planning stage requiring the completion of a baseline assessment of the age-friendliness of the city ensuring involvement from older adults in the planning process.

The Seniors Advisory Committee has developed 58 recommendations in the The Age-friendly Kingston Stage One Report to address the eight domains identified by the WHO, namely: outdoor spaces and buildings; transportation; housing; social participation; respect and social inclusion; civic participation and employment; communication and information; and community support and health services.”
