Age-friendly public transport initiative

 

The efforts of Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority as a coordinator on the Sharjah Age-Friendly City Program as the first Arab city to become eligible for this great global entitlement and to achieve the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qassimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, towards making the Sharjah City an ideal age-friendly environment, and its residents enjoy the best services. The Authority launched the Age-friendly Public Transport initiative, which exempts some groups from fees for using public transport, as well as a new tariff for taxis designated for people with disabilities in Sharjah. The Age-friendly public transport initiative is one of the most important initiatives launched by the authority in response to His Highness directives through which the elderly over the age of 60, people with mobility disabilities, beneficiaries of social assistance and children under 10 years old are exempted from the fees for using public transportation within the city of Sharjah. Bearing in mind that the decision has been implemented and a large number of public transportation users have benefited from it. The initiative covers the transport domain.

To keep in mind that the RTA provides a number of taxis equipped with the latest technical specifications necessary to transport people with disabilities and they contain equipment that suits their needs. It is equipped with a hydraulic lift that descends from behind the vehicle to carry the passenger with the designated chair with ease and is also equipped with straps to fix the chair inside the car.
