Age-Friendly Building Initiative

                           

 

 

Under the patronage of his highness Sheikh Salem bin Abdulrahman Al Qassimi member Head of Ruler office of Sharjah, Sharjah Age-friendly office has held an honoring ceremony of announcing the result of Age-friendly institution competition at its first round. Entities that have passes the criteria for the Age-friendly buildings initiative makes encouragement for all institutions in Sharjah to adopt Age-friendly standards and implement all initiatives and programs that contribute to being age-friendly institutions. This initiative targeted governmental and non- governmental institutions in Sharjah to accredited to age-friendly institutions. The initiative has a standard for accessible services and community empowerment for the elderly and those who passed the 80% from the required criteria were granted accreditation of their building as an Age-friendly institution. The main aim of the initiative is to enhance the membership of the Emirate of Sharjah in the global network of Age-friendly cities and its one of the important initiatives of the strategic plan. The number of the participations submitted in the initiative amounted about 41 buildings belonging to 19 institutions according to 28 standards for age-friendly institutions.  The Executive of Age-friendly has awarded 9 buildings belonging to 7 entities. The represented entities which they passed was the administration building of the University of Sharjah, Umm Ayman Mosque of The Department of Islamic Affairs, Sharjah Media City – Shams, Sharjah International Airport, Al Thiqa Club For the disabled, The Islamic Garden Building of the Environment and Nature Reserves Authority, The Museum of Islamic Civilization, The Sharjah Maritime Museum and the Sharjah Aquarium of the Sharjah Museums Authority.
