Age Friendly Auckland Symposium 2024 – a diverse and uplifting event

Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland held it’s third Age Friendly Auckland Symposium in November 2024 with the theme of Creating an inclusive, resilient city. Attendees included older people, aging sector organisations, local and central government and academia.
Professor Edwina Pio shared her research, “Belonging as an aging Asian”, there was a workshop about disaster preparation, and a panel discussion about the elder abuse prevention and support services available in our city. There was also an inspiring discussion about the benefits of creative aging led by Susan Jordan. The event included a welcome by elders from Ngāti Whatua Ōrākei the indigenous people of Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, as well as performances from the South Asian community, and elders from the Tongan Community in Auckland. It was an uplifting day with topical information shared, networking and discussion about how to make Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland a a great city to grow older in!
